Cuomo underreported nursing home COVID deaths by 50%, NY AG says

T.The truth always comes out!

According to a report released Thursday by New York Attorney General Letitia James, the New York Department of Health has dropped as much as 50 percent under the number of coronavirus deaths in the state’s nursing homes.

The finding, which was based on data from 62 nursing homes, appears to invalidate Governor Andrew Cuomo’s assurances that New York nursing home mortality rates are among the lowest in the country.

Cuomo often claimed that New York has a 20 percent mortality rate in nursing homes, which is far lower than states like Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.

“Look at the basic facts that New York compares to other states,” Cuomo said at a press conference in August, according to the Daily Caller. “You see where New York ranks as the percentage of nursing home deaths, it’s at the bottom of the list.”

Well, you might get the numbers wrong!

In July he said anyone who questions New York’s numbers is just “playing politics.”

“Talk to 34 other states first. Now speak to the Republican states – Florida, Texas, Arizona – and ask them what is happening in nursing homes. It’s all politics, ”he said.

Attorney General James’ analysis would suggest the death toll would be 9,000, compared to the New York Department of Health’s original figure of 6,000.

According to the report, 4,000 deaths occurred in nursing homes following Cuomo’s March order, which meant that nursing homes had to readmit residents even after positive COVID-19 tests, reports the Daily Caller. The report notes that there have been deaths in 323 facilities in which “apparently no COVID-19 infections were reported before admitting or re-admitting hospital residents diagnosed with COVID-19”.

James’ estimate of a 50 percent gap between reported and actual deaths is based on analysis of 62 nursing homes, which is roughly 10 percent of the facilities in the state.

Approximately 70% of the nearly 35,000 COVID deaths in New York were people aged 70 and over. This is based on state data as of Jan. 28, reports Fox News.

“As the pandemic and our investigation continue, it is imperative that we understand why New York nursing home residents have suffered needlessly so alarmingly,” James said in a statement. “While we cannot bring back the people we lost to this crisis, this report aims to provide transparency the public deserves and encourage increased action to protect our most vulnerable residents.”

Throughout the pandemic, Cuomo blamed President Trump for the number of deaths in the country.

“I hold Donald Trump responsible for every death from COVID in New York state because Trump lied,” Cuomo said.

Perhaps he should now hold himself accountable for his own mistakes and accurately report the data instead of blaming everyone else.
