What Happened to Wanda Maximoff’s Twin in the MCU?

We can’t quite talk about it WandaVision without considering the origins of the Scarlet Witch in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. And of course, we can’t dive into Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff without mentioning her twin brother Pietro Maximoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), aka Quicksilver. While Wanda has been a main character in a few Avenger films, we haven’t seen her brother that often. The short and simple reason for this is that Wanda’s twin dies shortly after his first appearance when the Avengers fight Ultron. Need a refresher on what is happening to Pietro before diving in WandaVision? Here’s a quick rundown of his previous role in the MCU.

We see the Maximoff twins in first Captain America: The Winter Soldier during a mid-credits scene in which Baron Wolfgang von Strucker experiments with the siblings. Avangers: Age of Ultron begins with the Avengers infiltrating the Socovian HYDRA facility, where Strucker conducts tests on his subjects using a scepter previously held by Loki. Here we officially meet Pietro and Wanda Maximoff, also known as Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Mercury has superhuman speed, while its sister has telekinetic powers – and more. Tony Stark eventually uses the scepter to activate his global Ultron defense program. However, his plan has a problem: Ultron becomes a sentient being who destroys JARVIS and attacks the Avengers. After his escape, Ultron retrieves a synthetic body and builds an army of robotic drones.

First, Pietro and Wanda are ready to join Ultron for blaming Tony’s guns for their parents’ deaths. However, Wanda can read Ultron’s mind and discovers that he wants to save the earth by literally destroying humanity. In short, Pietro and Wanda help the Avengers when they return to Sokovia, where Ultron is building a machine to raise part of the capital and plunge it down to eliminate people. During a battle against Ultron’s army, Pietro protects Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye, from being shot and dies quickly after that final victim. A heartbroken scarlet witch becomes vengeful and destroys Ultron’s body by ripping out its core processor, which unfortunately triggers the machine. Fortunately, Tony and Thor can dissolve the land mass and save the world. (Vision actually saves Wanda during this ordeal.) After the tragic death of her twin, Wanda joins the Avengers.

Will we see Wanda’s brother in these upcoming episodes of? WandaVision? Maybe. It is clear that something is wrong with Wanda’s world, and both she and Vision are not very well aware of their own history. Since Vision is dead and somehow managed to come back, we can see Pietro very well, if only in a hallucination or looking back.
