Who Is Asteria in Wonder Woman 1984?
Wonder Woman 1984 officially debuting on December 25th, and we have a new celebrity character in sight. While Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) is still our favorite superpowered princess goddess, the film introduces viewers to another powerful being that is perhaps even more legendary: the Amazon warrior Asteria. WW84 makes a few hints about the light fixture, and finally reveals its brave backstory when Steve asks Trevor (Chris Pine) about Asteria’s golden armor that Diana is hiding.
Diana explains that in ancient times the Amazons were enslaved by men before their mother Hippolyta freed them. But they couldn’t escape completely until Asteria fought alone against their opponents and seemingly sacrificed herself. Her protective gear, which included a pair of wings reminiscent of an eagle, was made from the armor of all other Amazons and, according to Diana, was “strong enough to conquer the whole world”. While Asteria distracted the men’s militancy and received hit after hit, the Amazons fled to Themyscira. Diana reveals that she was looking for Asteria when she left her home empire but found only the warrior’s armor.
As the movie’s only mid-credits scene confirms, there’s a reason Diana never found evidence of Asteria’s fatal sacrifice: the famous fighter survived the battle. During the short sequence, a woman wearing a blue cloak-like garment effortlessly prevents a falling bar from harming another woman and her baby. The mysterious, super-powered stranger then reveals herself to be Asteria. What’s even more amazing is that the actress she portrays is none other than Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman in the 1970s.
It’s unclear if the scene is just a nod to the OG live-action Wonder Woman or if this is teasing some future plot. Well there is a third Wonder woman Film is confirmed, we have to hope for the latter. I mean, how epic would it be if Gadot and Carter shared the screen as Amazon heroes?
